TOP-DOWN YOGA

The Evolutionary 'Body' of our Humanity

Introduction

In his seminal text, The Self-Organizing Universe, Erick Jantsch refers to a metafluctuation, in the 1960's, that "rocked the world." It was a time of grass roots movements and the awakening of awareness and concern in relation to the environment, the Vietnam War and human rights. It was also a time of novelty. Consciousness exploration with alternative lifestyles, communes, drugs, music and dance, and Eastern spirituality, provided powerful new guiding images and social norms. "The basic themes are always the same. They may be summarized by such notions as self-determination, self-organization and self-renewal, by the recognition of a systemic connectedness over space and time of all natural dynamics; by the logical supremacy of processes over spatial structures, by the role of fluctuation that renders the law of large numbers invalid and give a chance to the individual and its creative imagination."

Looking back today, it is easy to understand why the metafluctuation, which changed the world in some fairly radical ways, was dampened back into the existing paradigm did not have the coherence or momentum to
'carry' humanity over the threshold of a rigid ceiling of "unchangeable" values and beliefs. Now, almost a half century later, we, the human species, are very deep in the shift. We are precariously adrift in an instability threshold between to orders of evolution process. Indeterminacy reigns, the delicate balance of life on planet
earth has been severely disrupted. The systemic crisis is existential; it can not be addressed at the level at which it was created. The environmental, spiritual, social, educational, economic, and political crisis' all have the same root. That root is a 'natural' errancy inherent in the perceptive mechanisms of the dualistic neural-mental consciousness structure.

Fortunately, in the last half-century there has been an unprecedented influx of spiritual development, and science has made great strides-cracking the codes of the mysterious quantum dynamics inherent to life, all the way down to the microstructures and processes regulating quantum coherence in living organization-in embodiment. There is the internet which has spawned a world-wide "web" of instantaneous communication, a felt sense of interconnectedness, and of intuitive co-operative synergistic species-potential. Individuals and organizations attuned to the pulse of the planet and humanity are forming a unified field of intentionality, strategy and action.

The film, "An Inconvenient Truth" is stirring the pot from the bottom, and generating a focal point for a grassroots movement of unprecedented proportion. The environmental crisis is one of the most primary reflections of how fundamentally disconnected humans have become, from the earth and themselves.

The Social Engagement System
And Top-Down Yoga

Dr. Stephen Porges' recent new understanding of a 3rd branch of intelligence in the autonomic nervous system, the Social Engagement System associated with the mammalian vagus, has provided the framework for the development of a user-friendly and precise method of beneficial self-regulation known as Top-Down Yoga. This innovation provides the possibility for an accelerated and species-constant learning curve in evolutionary development as it physiologically overrides many of the impediments which humanity faces today. It
accomplishes this by releasing constriction in key points and facilitating optimal usage of neuroanatomical structures and chemistry, translating simply into positive and dynamic states of consciousness. Easy to learn and simple to perform, this technique can be engaged by anyone almost anywhere, sitting in a chair, standing or lying down. The cranial nerves of the Social Engagement System emerge from the brain stem. If the deep muscles of the neck are chronically tense, they become irritated. By gently introducing coherent information into the tissues and fluids of our body, rather than using force, we learn to regulate the formative processes of causation, where the information is produced which, in turn, is experienced as consciousness and the body.

The Social Engagement System is a manifestation of the synergistic functioning of five cranial nerves, organizing, integrating and coordinating looking, listening, vocal communication, facial expression, turning the head and regulating cardiac output. Its optimal and optimizing functioning leads to the emergent expression of
genuine care and concern embodied in love and social bonds. "Social bonds" are scientifically described as a powerful form of learning regulated by long-lasting changes in the endocrine system and brain. Regulation of cardiac output induces a positive state of immobilization, actualizing a conservation of precious life energy,
and reinstating the warm-blooded current of heart 'consciousness' as the central organizing principle and mechanism.

Through re-uniting the ancient, primordial cerebrospinal system with the newest and most evolutionary advanced component of the somatic continuum, the Social Engagement System, Top-Down Yoga generates a
reconfiguration and mood stabilization-in social engagement. It is an embodiment practice which optimally circulates cerebrospinal fluid throughout the body while activating the potent neuropeptide "messenger molecules" coordinating almost all physiological and emotional processes of the body on a cellular level.

When the cranial nerves of the Social Engagement System are not functioning optimally, autonomic conditions associated with reptilian intelligence drive the system toward dysregulation and mood collapse. A large majority of humanity is suffering from chronic stress, anxiety or depression. Top-Down Yoga self-regulation transforms these condition at the root level of formative causation. It is an autocatalytic process which generates an instantaneous functional shift in neuroanatomical continuity, awakening  regenerative capacities, knowing knowledge and a pleasurable felt sense of well-being.

A new model for evolutionary advancement

"In an alive, multilevel reality, the issue should be to keep precisely the highest level open to novelty."  --Erick Jantsch

The old model of the autonomic nervous system presents only two branches, the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems. That model has been shown to be incomplete as it only describes the autonomic
components we share in common with reptiles. The 3rd branch of intelligence, as found in mammals, introduces an autonomic alternative beyond the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems, which is emergent, always fresh and new, always embodied in the now moment.

An unrecognized condition of neurological inefficiency can feed feelings of resignation and lead to further dys-regulation and mood collapse. Many who are suffering with these symptoms unnecessarily turn to prescription drugs. Top-Down Yoga provides an alternative, which effectively utilizes ones own internal evolutionary resources. A system, whether it be an individual, a society, or species, which is chronically stuck in a less then optimal autonomic state, simply lacks the resources of energy, awareness and inspiration necessary to adapt
to challenges, internally and within its extended environment. On the other hand, a society or species that has integrated these intuitive motor behaviors of self-regulation into long-term memory embodies an emergent autopoeitic landscape of species-constant learning and behavior. So-called "consciousness" transforms into radiant collective wisdom, which arises as a field-like property of natural light that is the evolutionary 'body' of our humanity.

Top-Down Yoga directly activates the most potent positive neurochemistry in the human. The simple movements and postures generate an unprecedented novel context to explore beneficial evolutionary learning and collective wisdom. They also serve as an excellent aid in preparing the organism and psyche to rest in deep
meditative equipoise, and accomplish the crucial mind training necessary to embody dynamic wholeness. Through utilizing embodiment practices which "bind" the ancient and most evolutionary components of the somatic continuum, we may, in he words of Dane Rudhyar, "begin again together."

The Harmonic Continuum

The Harmonic Continuum is an ever-evolving, ongoing movement supporting the emergence of new social applications, which embody collective wisdom. The initial inspiration for the Harmonic Continuum was to create a context for popularizing the new understanding of the Social Engagement System as well as the simple practices of self-regulation for optimizing humanities latent potentials, as are evidenced in our physiology.

Exploring www.climatecrisis.org, the website for  the film "An Inconvenient Truth", and following the links to www.lauriedavid.com, this author had an insight into an expanded potential role of the Harmonic Continuum. A broader endeavor became clear. The Social Engagement System's essential capacity for jump-starting humanity's return to an intelligent evolutionary mainstream speaks to the heart and mind of every human being.

The Harmonic Continuum ceremonies will introduce powerful and coherent new guiding images and social norms, which introduce new social applications embodying collective wisdom. This new base-line reality of collective wisdom, is a necessary prerequisite for gaining momentum in a movement which will have the strength and rigor to collectively address the challenges we face creating a socio-human - environmental
symbiotic co-evolution. It is becoming increasingly clear that reestablishing such a symbiosis will become a pressing and essential factor in our healthy survival.

Former Canadian ambassador and planetary elder Jim George's book, "Asking For The Earth", views the present ecological and spiritual crises as 2 sides of the same coin. He relates the environmental / global warming issue to a spiritual crisis, being the underlying cause for the separation that has allowed us to get so far away from our own good. This clarification is a solid foundation for integrating the inner and outer dimensions of the work to be addressed within the single sphere of life's meaningfulness. The Harmonic Continuum brings these two foundational dimensions together as a context for inspiring the timely reinvention of the social, educational, economic and political dimensions as well.

Beyond large ceremonial events and films, The Harmonic Continuum practices can be utilized in all domains of human endeavor. Whether for liberating the individual from stress, anxiety, depression or PTSD, in the family, office, schools, for elderly care, in prisons or, during peace negotiations, in the Senate, Congress or White House, wherever and in any context, they always bring positive benefit.

Shift-in Action

The success of the film, "What the Bleep Do We Know" demonstrated the passion of millions to further understand the interrelationship between frontier sciences, spirituality and social dynamics. The Social Engagement System and The Harmonic Continuum embody a renewed level of learning and morality. Ceremonies, which celebrate the wisdom 'body' of our humanity, through a collective mediation of our morphic
potentials, provide an aquifer of fresh inspiration and a coherent and intuitive path of action. Live simulcast events in which embodiment practices, music, dance and comedy combine, providing a skillful new form of "social engagement"  awakening an accelerated evolutionary learning curve.

We envision a new genre of films, documentaries, dramas and comedies, which ignite the innate human skills of adaptation, and encourage participation in new social, environmental, scientific, political and economic 'applications' of collective wisdom. In order to carry vision into action the most fundamental key is the recovery of the openness, freedom and coherence of simply being. This is consistent with Prigogine's theory of so-called "dissipative structures", or, a "new order through fluctuation." It is the most fundamental key because, as
Erick Jantsch states, "Evolution is basically open. It determines its own dynamics and direction." "The linking back to origin," which is not localizable and basically open, "not only restores strength, but also create the possibility of recognizing and bringing into play ever new (autopoeitic) chreods, new developmental lines." Thus, inner reconfiguration leading to an embodied openness and freedom realigns the human with its true nature.

The pulse of unity within the rich diversity of our humanity will guide us as we cross the pending thresholds and come to re-embody the wisdom that is our birthright. This is all possible of course, and it appears more and more that what is required is simply removing the impediments to this. The indication is that, like nature, the human mind is, prior to traumatic imprints and imposed mechanizations, well organized and in harmony with itself and its environment. It is clear that the most efficient mode of effecting a widespread shift toward an
eco-sociological symbiosis is by re-instating the natural processes that govern this in the individual. We are fortunate that the simple and scientifically validated techniques for this are available now.

PRAISE FOR TOP DOWN YOGA

The quiet little movements of Top-Down Yoga automatically shift a person’s primary method of support from thinking to feeling.  There’s nothing wrong with thinking but feeling is better for assessing physical
safety and balance. Moreover, a mind relieved of>> these  preoccupations becomes clearer and more still.  I believe that this shift is one of the goals of most meditative practices, much of martial arts, yoga and even religion, since it entails the practical application of relying on a higher  power.  The good thing is that such reliance does not really require faith as it makes itself palpably manifest almost from the get-go.

What is does require is the looking for it. Top-Down Yoga is a pretty damned good place to start.  Not-coincidentally, a sense of unshakeable strength opens the heart.  There’s nothing wrong with the world that loving it can’t cure, especially that interior world where we’re stuck with our hurts and diminishments. Choosing invincible receptivity changes everything.

Emergent Evolution and the Somatic Continuum
Integration of the Social Engagement System

The spirit-based science of Energy Medicine is at the epi-center of the long anticipated evolutionary shift in human consciousness. In his seminal text, Stalking the Wild Pendulum, Itzak Bentov provided the key insight that, the next phase in the evolution of the nervous system involved uniting the cerebro-spinal and autonomic systems. The term emergent evolution is defined as an “evolution conceived as characterized by the appearance of different levels of wholly new and unpredictable characters or qualities, (as life and consciousness), through a rearrangement of pre-existing entities”, or component parts.

TOP-DOWN YOGA is a new approach to embodied self-regulation which integrates the cerebro-spinal system, with practical applications of the recent, new understanding of a 3rd branch in the autonomic nervous system, the Social Engagement System. The Social Engagement is a manifestation of the synergistic functioning of the five cranial nerves, organizing, integrating and coordinating looking, listening, vocal communication, turning the head and regulating cardiac output. As the newest and most evolutionary advanced component of the somatic continuum, the Social Engagement System embodies the emergent expression of love and social bonding. “Social bonds” are scientifically described as a powerful form of learning regulated by long-lasting changes in the endocrine system and brain. http://www.stressrelease.info/polyvagal_eng.html
and, http://www.nexuspub.com/articles/2006/interview_ma.htm

TOP-DOWN YOGA is a sequence of simple motor behaviors, which are easy to learn, and can be performed sitting in a chair, standing or lying down. TOP-DOWN YOGA catalyzes an instantaneous functional shift in neuroanatomical continuity which gently awakens the innate wisdom of the body. After performing a simple posture for one minute, the participant takes a little nap in order to let the body incorporate the learning that is potential in the exercise. Without this little respite, you have stress without learning. With napping, you learn faster, deeper, more stably. This procedure of doing a bit and resting, doing and resting, and so on, is the process by which we stimulate transference of what was learned, to long term memory. In other words, simply resting and doing nothing is how we participate in evolutionary learning.

These simple processes transform stress, anxiety, depression and PTSD at the root-level of formative causation. The same practices also generate the optimal somatic conditions for resting in meditative equipoise, and provide new social applications embodying collective wisdom. The efficacy of these processes must be experienced to be believed!

Please bring a blanket to lie on for the napping phases, and a meditation cushion if it is your pleasure to experience TOP-DOWN YOGA in the posture of meditation. Suggested donation $20

TOP-DOWN YOGA's ROOTS

TOP-DOWN YOGA draws from many established systems, both ancient and modern for its unique synthesis. It is practical and nearly effortless in its simplicity, making it useful for children, adults and seniors, alike. It can be performed by anyone, despite their position on the wellness spectrum, with or without comprehending its treatment philosophy and scientific basis.

Even when we are not consciously stressed or worried mentally, tensions in our bodies telegraph the mind below consciousness that we must prepare to fight or flee. Conversely, relaxing these physical tensions relaxes the mind more fully. It is a positive self-reinforcing improvement in our dynamic state. It frees our locked-up energies for growth and self-expression.

The work of many high-functioning and enlightened souls has been synthesized in TOP-DOWN YOGA. It bootstraps on the works of:

Gendlin's "Focusing"
Porges'Vagus Nerve research
Stanley Rosenberg
Buddhism
Sociology - social engagement system
Oschmann's Energy Medicine
Mark Comings' new physics
Mae Wan Ho's
and Robert O. Becker's biophysics,
Iona Miller's Nonlocal Healing
Francesco Varella's
consciousness studies
Qigong
etc, etc

We are not machines, nor are we computers in a clockwork universe. We live in a Universe undergird by embedded, nested fields, the source of all. Our mindbodies are seamlessly welded together and function holistically. They can also heal in a holistic way, even when so-called cures remain elusive. Chronic tension is the root of many maladies. Often distress shows up in the subtle fields of the body before manifesting more overtly. Degeneration can also be stopped at the field level.

Wherever we find ourselves in our dynamic healing arc we can benefit from the simple application of Top-Down Yoga. All we need to remember is to JUST DO IT!

There are no beliefs: only what you do and what you love. You can love yourself healthier. If you want to see if the system works, it is simple to make this perfectly safe experiment yourself, on yourself.

HOW TOP-DOWN YOGA WAS BORN
TOP-DOWN YOGA was created to fill a perceived gap in self-regulation techniques, based on new paradigm philosophy and current biophysical research. It also fits the bill for busy parents, business people, and the infirm. In fact, anyone, especially children can benefit from learning brief self-regulation techniques.

Do you have difficulty adapting, bouncing back, and coping with chronic stress, anxiety or depession, with or without medication? Would you like enhanced well-being, even more fulfilling personal relationships. When we are calmer within our self-esteem and resilience rises, and many of the tensions and problems our stress creates with others dissolves automatically.

Our psychophysical organism embodies not only our “unconscious” in its living matrix, but also the collective intelligence and healing wisdom of millennia. Natural healing is facilitated by relaxing the mindbody so it can recalibrate itself.

But who can relax in this uptight, fast-paced world? Maybe you are deeply concerned that, unless we discover a way to transcend the current state of human affairs our chances of surviving are waning each day? Can we ever put an end to meaningless death and destruction? Do you believe that it is our Destiny to become a successful species? If so, our work begins in our own backyard in our own self-regulation. Do you want to be part of the solution, rather than the problem?

Or, maybe you are already passionate about realizing your full potential and seek a simple, realizable practice that fits your busy lifestyle, and can be done easily, anywhere, anytime. If so, TOP-DOWN YOGA is for you.

New credible medical research shows the old neuronal regulation theories of mindbody interaction are insufficient to account for a variety of factors in our health and behavior.

WHAT IS TOP-DOWN YOGA?

TOP-DOWN Yoga is a universal human process, in self-regulation of living organization, that can be adapted for each individual's unique needs and
capacities. Anyone can learn to regulate their internal processes. Fundamentally, it is not a practice or discipline, it is an in-tuitive form of adaptaion in the organism’s self-organization.

It leads to the development and coordination of motor behaviors which ‘guide’ the process of living organization towards optimal functioning, well-being and pleasure. It is an ‘open’ system which can be be integrated with all fields of human endeavor. It also holds the promise that our collective journey into the future will be more coherent and successful.

TOP-DOWN YOGA is a cost-effective approach to relieving stress, anxiety and other dibilitating chronic conditions. In many cases it can eliminate
the need for therapy and medical intervention. It returns the power to the individual’s autonomous intelligence.

TOP-DOWN YOGA strenghtens the ability to feel and think with clarity, while enhancing innate capacities to have genuine care and concern for others. It also ‘sets’ the body-mind network as-a-whole in a condition of rest, conserving our energy and preserving the organism’s integrity. For those who explore contemplative practice, it regulates cardiac output, and, therefore meditatative equipoise. It aligns the system’s intelligence with the spiritual magma of the living earth, fostering co-evolutionary developmental symbiosis.

TOP-DOWN YOGA does require our enthusiatic attention and partcipation. Behavioral corrections of long-term habits only occur through awareness
and deep conviction. Restoration of coherence in cellular, fluid and nervous systems, and especially in the tiny (neuropeptide) structures within and throughout the body, supports the emergence of peace, safety, knowing knowledge and unitiy of intentionality.

The recent new understanding of a 3rd branch of in the autonomic nervous system (the Social Engagement System) embodying love and fostering deep
connection in social engagement, shines the light of awareness on species-level, “collective”, evolutionary intelligence. “Social bonds”
are scientifically described as a power form of learning leading to long-lasting changes in the endocrine system and brain. This metamorphiccapcity is bio-logically divine!

This new paricipatory knowledge system mobilizes pre-coded human potentials. Celebrating the reinstatment of the natural light that is our humanity, in the words of Dane Rudyar, “we can begin again together.”

NEUROCEPTION

According to by Dr. Stephen Porges, Brain-Body center, University of Illinois, "the term neuroception describes how neural circuits
distinguish whether situations or people are safe, dangerous or life threatening. Because of our heritage as a species, neuroception takes place in primitive parts of the brain, without our conscious participation. Faulty neuroception might lie at the root of several psychiatric disorders, including autism, schizophrenia, chronic stress and anxiety disorders, ADHD, and Reactive Attachment disorder." Currently, the number of individuals in our human family expressing these symptoms is epidemic in proportion. http://www.zerotothree.org/vol24-5a.pdf

Self-regulation (inter-communication) and social engagement (intra-communication) each require that the individual can be at rest (immobilized in safety) without fear, and feel somewhat balanced in his or her life. Feelings of threat create stress, putting one into a state of fight/flight (moblization) or freeze (immobilization in fear).

However, what is less obvious is that the individual may actually feel threatened when there are no "real" threats. This is faulty neuroception. It is possible that the nervous system is so irritated that the one is stuck in fear even though there is no real threat to survival. We find that many people are stuck in a less than optimal state due to a dysfunction in their nervous systems. They are keyed to fight or flee regardless of how safe the actual environment is. In most cases, function can be restored so that the child can feel safe and rest within the experience of mindfulness and awareness, promoting an optimal condition for meditation and social engagement.

Neuroception is a present-centered context for the calibration our relations with the 'extended' environment. Seeing, that is, self-regulating the entire realm of emergent interaction with one's 'social' environment in terms of three autonomic alternatives, provides several advantages; It conserves energy. If the individuals nervous system is functionally operative, the process of calibration itself is an emergent, moment to moment operation. It is not based on any conceptual belief system. It is a natural, 'unconscious', autonomic response of awareness "tuning-in" to its own, autonomus felt sense.

Psychologist and philosopher, Eugene Gendlin, has developed a systems approach for 'decoding' the bodily felt sense. His ground breaking work is well documented in his book, entitled "FOCUSING", and further refined using a process he calls, "Thinking At The Edge." His work presents a major contribution in fulfilling the complex requirements necessary for a coherent transition into a new paradigm of human evolution.

SELF-REGULATION

TOP-DOWN YOGA is an emergent process of self-regulation which awakens the optimal functioning of a neuroanatomical 'order" that has been described as "the wisdom of the body." These easy to learn simple motor behaviors can be performed sitting in a chair, standing or lying down with a pillow
under the head!

TOP-DOWN YOGA is a method of self-regulation that has proven successful in restoring the individual's feeling of safety, providing the present time environment is indeed safe. The two main modes of working are structural, and functional. We work 'structurally' to adjust or change the physical system. For example, most people who are in a psychological state of stress or depression have a rotated first vertebra.

The neural condition of stress is the root somatic cause underlying the increasing degeneration of health and social relations. Stress may be derived from pressure on the cranial nerves when the connective tissue wraps around some nerves as they exit the skull. This local pressure restricts blood flow to the nerve itself, causing dysfunction. It could also be the case that the rotation of the first vertebra reduces blood flow to certain areas of the brain and brainstem. There are several structural methods of approach for returning the first vertebra to a better position and thereby relieving chronic stress.

The Research

One such method is working with special movements of the head. These positions (asanas) are easy to learn and perform, and can be practiced everyone while sitting in a chair, standing or lying down. Holding the positions of the head for short periods of time de-contracts the deep muscles of the neck thus repositioning the first vertebra in relation to the base of the skull. This can relieve pressure on the vagal nerve, which, in turn, can restore proper function of the autonomic nervous system.

A second method is working with movements of the eyes. There is a neuroanatomical link called the occipital-optical reflex, between the 8 sub-occipital muscles at the base of the skull and the 12 eye muscles.

With physiological and psychological trauma a fixation can occur in the occipital-optical reflex system locking the trauma into the mind/body complex. Simple ways of moving and holding the eyes and head in specific positions at the same time releases the fixation, releases the fixation unlocking the holding patterns.

Embryonic Ocean Breathing is another method for releasing the sub-occipital muscles functionally. It entails a subtle adaptation in spinal movement while breathing. The normal way that we breathe engages the limbs, orienting the body to mobilize. This brings the sympathetic system into play. The adaptive movement does not engage the limbs or the sympathetic system. Attending to the simple motor behaviors aligning spinal-field awareness and the head with the gravitational axis simultaneously enhances the circulation of cerebrospinal fluid, thus awakening innate wisdom inhering in the body.

Paying close attention to the subtle undulations and process of aligning with the gravitational axis, spinal-field awareness becomes an optical axis, which "sees", regulates the organismic intelligence. As conscious awareness circulates in fluid systems of the body the affect on the autonomic nervous system is immediately calming. The 'body' abides as a felt sense, an oceanic presence resonating with noiseless intercommunication that governs the organism as-a-whole.

Another important method is working with simple motor behaviors regulating movement and holding of the neck, head and eye muscles in specific positions, brings the mind to a state of stillness, awakening powerful self-regulation of cardiac output. The myelinated vagus is actively inhibitory of the sympathetic nervous system at the level of the heart.

"The vagal brake provides a neural mechanism to rapidly change visceral state by slowing or speeding the heart rate. The vagal brake contributes to the modulation of cardiac output. Neurophysiologically, the vagal brake provides a mechanism to support the metabolic requirements for mobilization and communication behaviors.

Functionally, by modulating visceral state, vagal brake enables the individual to rapidly engage and disengage objects, and to promote self-soothing and calm behavioral states.

Biophysicst and leading proponent of the theory of quantum coherence in living organization, Dr. Mae Wan Ho, postulates that, "a pure coherent state for the entire system would be a many-mode quantum electrodynamical field with a collective phase over all modes. It may be attainable only under very exceptional circumstances, as during an aesthetic or religious experience when the "pure duration" of the here and now becomes completely delocalized in the realm of no-time and no-space.

Based on his own direct experience and observing others, Kiely suggests that the vagal brake is the "master switch" by which mammalian neuro-biological intelligence de-couples from its time and space binding modes of operation and enters into the quinessential resting phase of pure duration. Normally "duration" implies time, here it refers to the inner timing of the essential nature of the organism.

All of these methods often bring about the desired results in a matter of a few minutes, sometimes a few seconds. These methods have been developed over many years by Stanley Rosenberg. www.stanleyrosenberg. com/

They have been expanded and refined into the system called TOP-DOWN YOGA by Lorin Kiely.

The techniques actually move the recipient out of stress, anxiety and depression, the experience of states of fear, irritation/anger and apathy/hopelessness. They move one toward being centered in openness and clarity, the integrated state of stillness in both body and mind, the foundation of 'enlightened' social engagement.

THE WISDOM OF THE BODY

The basis of mind is the body in coupled action, that is, the sensory-motor circuits establish the organism as viable in situated contexts. From this perspective the brain appears as a dynamical process (and not a syntactic one of real-time variables with a rich self-organizing capacity (and not a representational machinery). So in this sense the mind is not in the head since it is rooted in the body-as a-whole and in the extended environment where the organism finds itself."
Francesco Varella

"In spite of a century of neuroscience and a decade of the brain, mainstream science is still unclear about he nature of consciousness and its relations to learning, memory and intelligence." Paradigm making research in the field of biophysics by Mae Wan Ho, and Dr. Jim Oschman, among others, demonstrates that ontologically speaking, the evolution of intelligence, at the level of the human organism has its origin in the so-called 'body' consciousness.

"The matrices within and between the cells in the human body, collectively called the living matrix, give rise to the primordial and evolutionarily ancient form of intelligence or consciousness that predates the nervous system. The living matrix is the molecular system that is the actual biophysical locus of the so-called subconscious, unconscious and intuitive processes described in the psychological literature." Jim Oschman, Evolution of the Intelligent Body

THE BRAIN IS IN THE BODY

The "body consciousness" works in tandem with, but independently of the "brain consciousness" constituting the nervous system. Mae Wan Ho has suggested that instantaneous coordination of body functions is mediated, not by the nervous system, but by the body consciousness inhering in the liquid crystalline continuum of the body. Ho and Knight following Oschman, review evidence suggesting that this liquid crystalline continuum is responsible for the direct current (DC) electrodynamical field, permeating the entire body of all animals, that Becker and others have detected.

Becker has further demonstrated that the DC field has a mode of semi-conduction that is much faster than nervous conduction. During a perceptive event, local changes in the DC field can be measured half a second before sensory signals arrive in the brain, suggesting that the activities in the brain may be pre-conditioned by the local DC field."
Mae Wan Ho, Quantum Coherence and Conscious Experience

"There is a 'consciousness' residing in the cellular and extracellular matrixes found throughout the human body. The living matrix is a continuous, global or whole-person system that outdates the nervous on hormonal systems in terms of evolutionary history. It is composed of biopolymers with enormous capacity to store information.

The relationship of the matrix to the nervous system is that the nervous system is actually composed of this primordial system. The matrix actually reaches every portion of the organism that is reached by nerves, and the matrix also reaches places where nerves and capillaries do not reach." -Jim Oschman, Evolution of the Intelligent Body

The human physics underlying the dynamics of the Social Engagement System, and quantum coherence in living organization, provides a new Autopoeitic landscape for species-level evolution. Knowledge and means for embodying the living intelligence of the Social Engagement System and the 'condensation' processes of polymerization and macro- molecular
formation leading to the development of the body-mind phenomenon, provide the founding stratum of a new participatory knowledge system for awakening the evolutionary learning process of humankind-at-large.

Sample Top-Down Yoga Exercises

TOP DOWN YOGA EXERISES from Lorin Kiely
Here are a few isometric exercises for releasing tension in the deep muscles of the neck - the scalenes and sub-occipitals - thereby relieving irritation on the vagal nerve. Then, a subtle adaptation in spinal movement while breathing enhances the flow of CSF while inhibiting the acitivation of the sympathetics, thus generating a new central algorhythm that I call Loving Love. It is consistent with completion stage yogic practice in Dzog chen and Mahamudra.

Exercise 1, 2 and 3 are for releasing tension in the deep muscles of the neck. This will create more open space for the head to naturally remain more aligned with the entire spine in its dynamic balance with the gravitational axis. It will also relieve pressure on the Xth cranial nerve, the vagus.

EXERCISE 1

1) Sitting near the edge of the chair, spine upright, feet flat on the floor. Inhale, turning he head to the left as far as comfortably possible without creating a stressful sensation. When you have reached that point, rotate the face up toward the ceiling by putting isometric pressure in the sub-occipital muscles at the base of the skull.

Gently tip the chin up. Hold it up and turn the head, with micrmovements, a tiny bit further toward the shoulder WITHOUT the head loosing its upward rotation. Hold the position for 20 to 30 seconds.

Come out of the position and rest, either sitting or lying down for a Few minutes. Simply be aware of the felt sense of your organism as a whole.

Then repeat the process on the other side.

EXERCISE 2

2) Sitting near the edge of the chair, spine upright, feet flat on the floor. Inhale turn the head to the right as in the first exercise. Lift the top of the head-up and draw the chin-in toward the spine thereby rotating the face toward the floor. Refine the position of the head with micromovements as in the first exercise. Hold the posture for 20 to 30 seconds.

Come out of the position and rest either sitting upright or lying down for a short while. Simply be aware of the felt sense of your organism as a
whole.

EXERCISE 3

3) Sitting near the edge of the chair, spine upright, feet flat on the floor. Inhaling turn the head to the right as far as it is comfortable. Keep the chin-in and raise the top of and sides of the head-up. Keeping the top of the head up, look over the right shoulder and hold the eye muscles without moving. As you continue to lift the top of the head-up, hold the eyes and eye muscles in immobilization with awareness and relaxation for 30 seconds.

Close the eyes and slowly turn the head back forward. Rest for a few minutes either sitting upright or lying down. Then repeat the process on the other side.

EXERCISE 4

4)Oceaning breathing - Riding the Tides, does not engage the arms and legs, or the sympathetic nervous systems. It is based on an adaptation of spinal movement while breathing which generates an optimal condition of rest, relaxation and regeneration of the organism as a whole.

Gently lifting the soft palate of the roof of the mouth while INHALING into the lower belly and subtly drawing the throat back. Imagine that you are making a curved bow, straight. Continue inhaling raising the top of the head-up and flattening-down the back. The sitz bones will roll-back.

At the top of the breath the spine, from the crown to the tip of the coccyx is aligned with the gravitational axis of the earth. Pause there and gently hold the breath at the navel.

Release the throat while maintaining the your vertical axis EXHALE, as You roll forward on the sitz bones.

Simply cultivate mindful participation, synchronizing and timing the motor behaviors which facilitate the circulation of conscious awareness in the unbroken sphere of total present awaeness, over and over again.

EXERCISE 5

5) THE BIG DRAW
Ah, Ah, Ah

Once having liberated the vagal and deep muscles of the neck, and adapted to the renewed sine wave of spinal undulation, tried them all sitting, standing and lying down the, bring your awareness into the muscles which regulate the movement of the eyes.

Spread it evenly throughout and observe the heart rate and breathing. With the spherical cavity of the eyes totally relaxed, very subtlly and sensuously, gentle draw the eye muscles back just slightly, and hold them-in, in a state of i m m o b i l i z a t i o n, with awareness and relaxation for 30 - 60 seconds.

This activates neuropeptide intercommunication via the smart vagus - vagal brake -in the sinoatrial node, pacemaker in the heart. I believe that this is the master switch by which organismic intelligence decouples from time and space, and attains a biological state of quintessential rest.

Hold and observe the increase in radiance radiating from the still point that has no localization. Afterwards, for a few minutes DO NOTHING, not even observe. Remain no where at all. Do not even fixate on the bliss.

EVOLUTIONARY QUANTUM LEAP

Rhythmic entrainment of the enhanced subtle-body circulation of CSF, with the activation of the bioluminescent neuropeptide cascades, generates a heightened state of awareness and noiseless intercommunication while transforming one's energy into healing elixir, morphic resonance and bliss. The nervous system diversifies tremendously with an increase in the variety of modes of neuronal interactions, which entails growth in the cephalic portion. In this process, matter-dominated mentation is transferred crisscross to new evolutionary sequences.

The ancient evolutionary intelligences inherent in 'body’ consciousness are, phylogenetically, a more primary cognitive domain then the neural-mental ‘brain’ consciousness. It is this 'wisdom of the body' which, as an neuroanatomical 'order' of organismic awareness, leads us to an understanding of what lies beyond that which we know how to analyze. It is also the originary source-point of our collective embodied resonance/intelligence.

A SPECIES-TYPICAL GENETIC CODE

The Social Engagement System is a species-typical genetic code. In the direct lived-through experience of its field-like qualities, 'consciouness' arises as a radiant collective property of the body of our humanity. As such, it is the mechanism provided by evolution for the radical irrealization of the cognitive obscurations inherent within dualistic perception.

The function of the nervous system diversifies tremendously, and evolves with the increase in variety of modes of neuronal and neuropeptide interactions. The more complex the activity, the greater is the ground for evolutionary learning.

The Social Engagement System is the crown jewel of neural evolution, the fruitional cephalic endstage of neocortical development, and simultaneous explication of precoded innate intelligence for the endogenous unfolding of a collective phase in human evolution.

The same processes that transform our internal condition also provide a powerful influence on how we respond in social engagement. These processes release certain "messenger molecules", such as oxcytocin and serotonin, which self-soothe and calm our internal state. They also generate the emergent "warm-blooded" intelligence, which embodies genuine care and concern for others. When the body re-members these optimal conditions we move forward in our evolutionary journey, both
individually and collectively.

The best medicine to cure our individual and collective dis-ease is our own precious energy in-form-ation, self-regulated by morphic resonance.

Organismic awareness is felt sense of morphic potentials. The autonomus, felt sense of original experience creates a field of meaning, which is the meaning of life. Life itself provides all the answers as we create and recreate ourselves each moment. The efficacy of these simple natural processes, when experienced, will be believed.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

We are describing a new synthesis that is occurring in living organization. Recent new understandings in the biophysics of embodiment indicate self-regulatory capacities inherent in the human organism which give rise to optimal neurobehavioral states supporting well-being, social engagement and evolution. are universally accessible.

A recent new understanding of 3rd branch in the autonomic nervous system, the Social Engagement System, presents a species-typical genetic code, and the principles and mechanism for actualizing a new autopoeitic landscape which utilizes morphic resonance as the principle and mechanism of communication via collective intelligence. This synthesis in autopoeitic self-organization provides the basis for designing an autocatalytic, emergent participatory knowledge system integrating science, spirituality and sociocultural evolution.

SHIFT HAPPENS

What's New in TOP-DOWN HEALING?

Physics, Medicine, and Psychology are all undergoing a profound revisioning of their underlying theories which is called PARADIGM SHIFT. The old order is breaking down in the gaps of our knowledge, and the new vision is emerging.

Understandings about glial cells, the theory of pain, brain regeneration, even the way we heal and evolve, have all gone the same way. Science
and medicine must be revised with these new, revolutionary discoveries in mind. Energy Medicine and other CAM technologies are leading the way, not waiting for the old science to die off.

Fresh research has revealed a new understanding of a 3rd neural circuit in the autonomic nervous system, has made possible a user-friendly participatory approach to self-regulation and embodied well-being that is universally accessible.

Without third-party intervention, massage or medication any individual, on their own, can discover how to liberate chronic debilitating states at the root.

Once we remember how good we can feel there is more open 'space' to enjoy the company of others. When we come into the world, we are already embedded in a social context. Evolution intended humans to be social beings and, perhaps, to evolve into a collective social organism.

As we learn to embody a direct lived-through experientail understanding Of this 3rd neural circuit in the autonomic nervous system, the so-called Social Engagement System, we may even peer through the deceptive veils of dualistic conception.

TOP DOWN YOGA

TOP-DOWN YOGA is an emergent process for self-regulation arising from the new paradigm of ENERGY MEDICINE. The simple motor behaviors employed in the process are homologous with certain key aspects of completion stage yoga in the Tibetan meditational practices of Mahamudra and Dzog Chen.

These easy to learn simple motor behaviors can be performed sitting in a chair, standing or lying down with a pillow under the head.

Very important cranial nerves that emerge from the brain stem become irritated if the deep muscles of the neck are chronically tense. By gently introducing coherent information into the tissues and fluids of our body, rather than by using force or pressure, we learn to regulate the formative processes underlying the experience of consciousness and the body.

Simply holding the body, head and eyes in specific positions for just 30 seconds immediately begins to expand the consciousness in a direction of comfort and ease.

TOP-DOWN YOGA is an embodiment practice which optimally circulates cerebrospinal fluid throughout the body while activating the potent neuropeptide "messenger molecules" coordinating almost all physiological and emotional processes of the body on a cellular level.

Embryonic Ocean Breathing, an aspect of TOP-DOWN YOGA, is a subtle adaptation in spinal movement, which mirrors the process of breathing during embryonic development. It embodies the two basic trends in the autopoetic development of the nervous system; uniting the neurons in a compartment (nervous chord) and concentrating a greater neuronal volume in the cephalic end (cephalization).

The synergistic functioning of five cranial nerves having to do with looking, listening, vocal communication, facial expression, turning the
head and regulating the beat of the heart, generate the warm-blooded intelligence leading to the emergent expression of love, in self-regulation and social engagement. Neuropeptide intercommunication
of the same five cranial nerves utilized in healing autism, chronic states of stress, anxiety, depression, ADD and other human maladies, are utilized in awakening the highest yogic states of awareness in Kriya and Kundalini yoga, Qigong and Dzog chen.

THE AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM

"The old interpretation of the autonomic nervous system describes two stages. Behaviorally, the first stage, parasympathetic, is associated with immobilization behaviors such as feigning death and also for rest and restoring the body. The second stage is characterized by the sympathetic nervous system that is capable of increasing metabolic output and inhibiting the visceral (sub-diaphragmatic) vagus to foster mobilization behaviors necessary for ‘fight or flight’.

The third stage, unique to mammals, is characterized by a myelinated vagus that can rapidly regulate cardiac output to foster engagement and is engagement with the environment, without engaging the sympathetics. The mammalian vagus is neuroanatomically related to the cranial nerves that regulate social engagement via facial expression and vocalization."

.index/spinner/polyvag.htm

The third autonomic alternative, the Ventral Vagal Complex or Social Engagement System, is comprised of cranial nerves V, VII, IX, X and XI. The Xth cranial nerve, the ventral vagal, also referred to as the mammalian vagus or "the smart vagus" is the intercommunication center synergistically integrating the in-form-ation flow of five cranial nerves.

Their synergistic functioning organizes, integrates and coordinates looking, listening, vocal communication, turning the head, facial expression and regulating the beat of the heart. This generates the warm-blooded intelligence, which leads to the emergent expression of love and social bonds.
